Murray Wins In Straight Sets

June 24, 2008 by CLDsport

Wimbledon LogoAndy Murray has beaten Fabrice Santoro of France 6-3 7-5 7-6 (7-5) in the first round at Wimbledon, but did not have an easy ride.

Santoro was a tricky customer, playing some fantastic shots throughout and giving Murray plenty to think about.

Murray earned his first break in the 3rd game of the first set, but failed to make it count. Murray’s tendancy to use the drop shot at inopportune moments allowed Santoro to get back into the set at 3-3. Murray was proving to be too good for the 35-year-old though, and immediately broke back - eventually winning the set 6-3.

The second set saw Murray’s serve broken immediately, but once again the British number 1 held his nerve to break back and make it 4-4. Having held his service game, he then broke Santoro to take the set 6-4.

This was becoming an extremely professional display. Murray remained calm and in control, despite the trickiness of his opponent.

Santoro managed to take the 3rd set into a tie-break, but Murray won it to take the match and advance to the second round, where he meets Xavier Malisse.

If Murray is to qualify for the latter stages of the tournament, he must work on his second serve. Santoro gained the majority of his points by approaching the second serve and a better player may well have taken more of an advantage.
