Andy Murray is due to play Stanislas Wawrinka in the Rome Masters shortly, with knowledge that if he wins, he will face Rafael Nadal in round three.
Murray beat Juan Martin del Potro in round one on Monday after the Argentinian retired in the 3rd set - with the score tied at 1 set each.
Nadal is to face Ferrero in round 2 and is strong favourite to beat the unseeded Ferrero. If Murray advances, he will meet Nadal in round 3.
Murray has beaten Wawrinka twice already this season, but the Swiss prefers clay and is ranked just six places below Murray in 24th.
Elsewhere in the tournament, Federer is through to the 3rd round after beating Argentinian Canas 6-3, 6-3 and will face either Starace or Karlovic for a place in the 4th round.
Andy Roddick has also booked his place in the 3rd round after winning easily (6-1, 6-4) against fellow American Fish.
While there have been no unexpected results as yet in Rome, could Murray put Nadal out in the 3rd round? Stay tuned to CLDsport for more results as we get them.
