Chelsea v Liverpool: Preview

With the big match due to kick off in just under 2 hours and a place in the final in Moscow versus fellow Premier League outfit Manchester United up for grabs, the tension is building.

The expected teams are;

Chelsea (4-3-3) - Cech, Ferreria, Carvalho, Terry, A Cole, Makelele, Essien, Ballack, J Cole, Drogba, Kalou

Liverpool (4-2-3-1) - Reina, Arbeloa, Carragher, Skrtel, Riise, Mascherano, Alonso, Kuyt, Gerrard, Babel, Torres.

John Terry for Chelsea and Gerrard and Carragher for Liverpool will be suspended for the final if they are booked in tonight’s match.

This of course is the third time Chelsea and Liverpool have met in the Champions League semi-finals and Liverpool are the only English team to knock Chelsea out of a European competition having done so in 2004-5 and 2006-7. Chelsea have never been beaten by an English club in a European match at Stamford Bridge. In fact, Arsenal are the only English club to score here doing so in a 1-1 draw in a Champions League quarter-final 4 years ago.

Liverpool have not scored at Stamford Bridge since Rafa Benitez became manager. That’s 8 matches, or 720 minutes of normal time. Tonight they have to score, or Chelsea will be off to Moscow!

    GOAL!!!!!

    Chelsea 1 Liverpool 0

Didier Drogba in the 33rd minute. Kalou skips clear with Lampard’s through ball - although he did look offside.

Kalou’s fierce shot saved by Reina but Drogba smashes home the rebound!

So, 1-0 at half time (2-1 on aggregate) and as things stand Chelsea will be off to Moscow to meet Man Utd in the all English final.

It’s been a game that Chelsea deserve to be leading. They are passing the ball around nicely and are definitely looking like deserved winners.

Not that Liverpool haven’t had their chances. Their most notable coming from in form Torres, but he took the ball too wide, narrowing the angle. This made the chance a tough one - and he proved it by missing!

It’s a good game so far. Liverpool need to score twice to win it - or once to take it to extra time and a possible penalty shoot out.

It’s still raining, the pitch is drenched. Anything could happen on this slippery pitch and perhaps Liverpool should adopt a shoot-on-site mentality. Petr Cech may be the best keeper in the world - but the ball is moving so fast on this surface.

Liverpool have started the second half well with 2 chances in 30 seconds. Cech makes a world class save that results in a Liverpool corner - which in turn results in a scramble in the Chelsea penalty area. Chelsea survive.

It’s a very open game now. Liverpool are seeing much more of the ball. They have to go for it now, before it’s too late

    GOAL!!!!!!

Fernando Torres makes it 1-1 on the night, 2-2 on aggregate. Extra time looming?!?!

  6. CLDsport on April 30th, 2008 8:09 pm

Benayoun beats Drogba and Kalou and cuts in from the right and then releases Fernando Torres in the box who takes one touch with his left and finishes with his right.

Very tense atmosphere now. Both teams know that the next goal could win it so they are desperately trying to get the mix of attack and defend right

    The crowd seem nervous
