Cristiano Ronaldo To Stay At United For One More Year
August 7, 2008 by CLDsport
Cristiano Ronaldo has revealed that he will play for Manchester United for at least “one more year”, ending the summer long speculation regarding his future - and more specifically his transfer to Real Madrid.
It seems that United manager Alex Ferguson has utilised his man management skills in persuading the 23-year-old Portuguese winger to remain at Old Trafford for this season.
Ronaldo, who scored 42 goals for United last season, told Portuguese paper Publico;
“Sir Alex Ferguson heard my arguments, I heard his and it was settled that the best thing would be for me to stay. I can confirm that, next season, I will play for Manchester United.”
Ronaldo failed to rule out a possible transfer to Madrid at some point in the future however, and made it clear that it was his desire to leave Old Trafford, saying;
“I knew Real Madrid were interested in signing me and that they had allegedly made a very high offer to Manchester United. My desire was, for some time, that Manchester had accepted my transfer to Madrid. Saying otherwise would be to trick people and my own consciousness.”
Alex Ferguson seems to believe that Ronaldo was only interested in the money, despite Ronaldo’s admission during the summer that he has always dreamt of playing for Real. Ferguson told MUTV;
“The fans have got to understand; it’s very difficult when a young boy is tempted by all this money.”
If I was a United fan, however, I would much prefer to hear that he was tempted by the chance to play for a club he has always wanted to play for. Having a player in the squad that is only after the money - to me at least - would be a negative. In my eyes, Ferguson made the wrong kind of statement to his club’s fans.
It seems to me that Ronaldo is destined to be a Real Madrid player, probably as early as next summer. For now though, at least, he is a Manchester United midfielder - and will be terrorising English defences once again this season.
Chelsea are likely to suffer a double blow;
- the best player in the Premier League will be appearing for their closest Premiership rivals
- Robinho is unlikely to be allowed to leave the Bernabeau for Stamford Bridge - despite admitting he is desperate to move to London.
