Spanish Grand Prix: Raikonnen Grabs Pole

April 26, 2008 by CLDsport

Barcelona, Spain: Fernando Alonso was denied pole position in his home race following a fantastic final lap from Kimi Raikonnen.

Raikonnen’s flawless final lap was clocked at 1min 21.813sec and pushed home favourite Alonso into second place by 9 hundreths of a second.

Felipe Massa will start Sunday’s race behind his team mate in 3rd place, with Robert Kubica alongside. Lewis Hamilton will have his work cut out if he is to get his season back on track following his poor 5th place qualification. The British McClaren driver will start alongside his team mate Kovalainen following another disappointing performance from the car - which still looks way behind Ferrari in overall performance.

Alonso’s front row position is believed to be due to a running lighter on fuel. Renaults technical director Pat Symonds said that Alonso’s performance was down to ’strategy’. Draw your own conclusions!
