Paris Street Race One Step Closer?

F1 LogoBernie Ecclestone has hinted that a F1 race around the streets of Paris may be possible by the 2010 season.

The comments were made after announcing that this years French GP at Magny-Cours would be the last race at this location. Ecclestone has long complained that the circuit is inaccessible and does not meet modern F1 standards.

The French GP has been based at Magny-Cours since 1991.

The F1 Supremo said:

“I would really love a French Grand Prix in the streets of Paris. Prime Minister Francois Fillon told me we would see if we could have a Grand Prix in Paris or just outside but that would not necessarily be for 2009, rather for 2010.”

After meeting Prime Minister Fillon last year, it was announced that the towns of Versailles and Evry and a site near Disneyland Paris east of the capital, were being considered as replacement venues. But Ecclestone’s comments may indicate that the chosen venue would be Paris itself.

Many F1 fans would love to see the street race, and could prove to be a big audience winner. If a new venue is not decided upon by next season, the French GP may be dropped from the F1 calendar - temporarily at least.

CLDsport’s opinion: Give Magny-Cours one last year in 2009, and then move to Paris central for an enthralling street race in the 2010 season…..
