Hamilton takes pole position in Canada

Lewis Hamilton stormed to pole position in qualifying for tomorrow’s Canadian Grand Prix amid concerns over the crumbling surface of the Montreal track.

Robert Kubica surprised everyone by taking provisional pole position with one minute of the session remaining, but Hamilton produced a stunning final lap to move 6/10th of a second clear of the BMW driver.

The Ferrari drivers had an indifferent session. Raikkonen had the edge over a nervous-looking Massa and both drivers struggled in the final sector. They line up 3rd and 6th on the grid.

Williams have brought a neat and competitive package to Canada, with Nico Rosberg taking 5th position.

Mark Webber had a strong run to fourth place in Q2, but damaged his car on the final lap and did not run in Q3, lining up 10th.

Adrian Sutil returned to life near the back of the grid after running in fourth position during the Monaco Grand Prix two weeks ago. Jenson Button suffered with gearbox failure in Q1 and is likely to start from the back of the grid.

The crumbling track surface was worse at turn 10, forcing marshals to sweep the loose tarmac off the racing line between sessions Q2 and Q3.

The top 10 for tomorrow:

  1. Hamilton
  2. Kubica
  3. Raikkonen
  4. Alonso
  5. Rosberg
  6. Massa
  7. Kovalainen
  8. Heidfeld
  9. Barrichello
  10. Webber
