Weekly Football Round-Up: 24th August 2008

August 24, 2008 by CLDsport

Welcome to this weeks football round-up!

Well, this is the first round-up since the beginning of the Premiership season - due to the fact that we have forgotten to write one last week. An unfortunate hangover was the cause. No more drinking! We are slacking already?! Unbelievable! Ah well, we’re back this week, and have lots to discuss so lets get straight into it.

Weekly Football Rumours

Once again it’s the same rumours that seem to be circulating around the media. You could probably name them without our help. Yes, that’s right, it’s Dimitar Berbatov, Robinho and Kaka. Those are the three most talked about transfer rumours since, well, I guess the moment Cristiano Ronaldo committed his immediate future to Manchester United.

So, where are we……

Berbatov started on the bench for the opening game of the season, although Spurs’ coach Juande Ramos did bring him on in an attempt to avoid the defeat at Middlesbrough. It didn’t work as Tottenham lost 2-0.

On to this weekend, and Berbatov is not even in the squad - despite Spurs only having ONE striker in Darren Bent. News from the Spurs camp suggest the Bulgarian was not included due to a ‘lack of focus’. It has been rumoured that Berbatov has slapped a transfer request onto the manager’s desk.

I think we can categorically add the term ‘lack of focus’ into the football dictionary with the definition ‘impending transfer to Man Utd’. Yes, I’d say Berbatov WILL be at Old Trafford before the end of the month.

Today’s press reports suggest that United have tabled a £25million take it or leave it offer in a last attempt to force Spurs to admit defeat and sell their star player.

So, Robinho. The Brazilian has almost pleaded with Real Madrid to let him join Chelsea. Real do not want to sell, but do they really want to keep hold of a player so desperate to leave? I’d recommend they let him go - but I’m no club president with thousands of fans to keep happy.

Staying at Chelsea, and more specifcally the attempt to bring Kaka to The Bridge. There are kixed reports being thrown around the media. On one hand there are the reports of a £78million deal on the cards, but meanwhile, some sections of the press believe the deal is pure fabrication (i.e. made up!!).

Now that Shevchenko has moved back to Milan though, some reporters believe that the deal may help relations between the two clubs enough to let Kaka move.

This report claims that both Robinho and Kaka will join Chelsea for a combined £100million. Read Report Here.

Other rumours suggest that Anton Ferdinand is set to make a move to big spenders Sunderland before transfer deadline day. Alan Curbishley admitted after West Ham’s 3-0 defeat at Man City today that the club have accepted a bid - thought to be in the region of £8million. The defender is thought to be considering the move.

Weekly Transfer News

Former Liverpool striker Djibril Cisse has joine Sunderland on a season-long loan deal from Marseille. The 27-year-old spent 3 years at Liverpool, scoring 11 goals in 49 appearances, but moved to Marseille due to Rafa Benitez allowing the Frenchman little time on the pitch.

Cisse has already scored his debut goal in yesterday’s 2-1 win at Tottenham - ironically on the very same ground that he scored on in his Liverpool debut.

Meanwhile, Man Utd defender Mikael Silvestre has moved to Arsenal for an undisclosed fee. The 31-year-old leaves the club just 1 match away from 250 appearances for United after spending 9 years in Manchester.

Elsewhere, Anthony Gardner has moved to Hull, and Aston Villa have secured the signing of Carlos Cuellar from Rangers for £8million.
