Champions League Final: Pre-Match Statistics

May 20, 2008 by CLDsport

This is the first ever all-English final, but the 3rd time two clubs from the same country have met in such a match.

In 2000 the final was an all Spanish meeting between Real Madrid and Valencia - with Madrid winning 3-0. While in 2003, the Italians took over with AC milan beating Juventus on penalties.

HEAD-To-HEAD

The final will be the 151st meeting between Manchester United and Chelsea. As things stand, United have won 65, Chelsea 41 and (to save you doing the maths!) 44 have ended as a draw. Chelsea have avoided defeat against Alex Ferguson’s team 5 times out of the last 6 competitive meetings.

Chelsea have taken more Premier League points off United than any other club - 43 to be exact.

Being the first time these two clubs have EVER met in a European competition, we cannot give you any European head-to-head details. I’m sure you understand!

Whilst Man United have never met English opposition in the Champions League, Chelsea are no strangers to it. They have beaten Arsenal 3-2 on aggregate in the 2004 quarter-finals, then lost to Liverpool in the semis just 12 months later. In the following season they completed two 0-0 draws in the group phase, before losing to them in the semis for the second time last year. Of course, we all remember that they beat the Merseysiders in the semi-finals this year. Wow, Chelsea should be experts in this right?!

Either Man Utd or Chelsea will break an unbeaten final record tomorrow night in Moscow. Both teams have won all the major European finals they have appeared in.
