Robbie Keane’s Transfer to Liverpool Imminent?
July 25, 2008 by CLDsport
News reports suggest that Robbie Keane is set to sign for Liverpool ‘within the next 48 hours’ for a fee believed to be approximately £18million. Rafa Benitez has long admired the Spurs’ striker, and stated last week he hopes to sign him before the start of the season.
Keane has been at White Hart Lane for 6 seasons, and has scored 107 times in 253 appearances for the North London club.
Ironically, Keane almost joined Liverpool as early as 1997, before choosing to sign for Wolverhampton Wanderers instead. He cited the improved chance of breaking into the Molineux first team as his reason for turning down a move to Anfield.
After one season with Coventry City in 2000-01, he earned himself a £13million move to Inter Milan, and played alongside Ronaldo and Cristian Vieri. The move soon turned sour after the sacking of manager Marcello Lippi soon after his arrival. New manager Marco Tardelli deemed him surplus to requirements, and Keane was loaned out to Leeds Utd - before the move became a permanent one.
After 3 seasons with Leeds, and falling down the pecking order, Keane was sold in the midst of the Leeds financial crisis. Glenn Hoddle was only to happy to sign the Irishman for £7million in 2002.
Keane has won the Tottenham Hotspur Player of the Year award 3 times in his 6 years with the club - more than any other player.
Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool, and Keane himself had no comment on the reported transfer.
Spurs’ fans, and Liverpool fans - any thoughts?
As a Spurs’ fan myself, I’d like to see Keane stay, as the 28-year-old shows the spirit and determination that should run throughout the side. When he pulls on that Spurs shirt, nothing else matters but gaining the right result. It would be a huge loss if he left. Or, should we cash in on him while we can?! We need a huge replacement for him if he is to leave us, or I can see some fans being rather disgruntled.
