Pavlyuchenko To Sign For Spurs
August 26, 2008 by CLDsport
Spartak Moscow striker Roman Pavlyuchenko has announced that he is set to join Tottenham Hotspur.
The 26-year-old appeared for Guus Hiddink’s Russian team in Euro 2008 in the summer, and finished as the team’s top scorer with 3 goals, while also winning the man of the match award in the game vs Greece (despite not scoring). Pavlyuchenko was named in the 23-man ‘Team of the Tournament’ after the final.
Pavlyuchenko has been at Spartak Moscow since 2003, and has scored 75 times in 145 appearances for the club. His devotion to the club’s emblem has seen him become increasingly popular with the Moscow fans.
With 9 goals in 21 appearances for his country - including 2 against England in the 2-1 defeat to Russia in Euro 2008 qualifying last year - he does have an impressive all-round scoring record.
The Russian said;
“I can confirm I’m joining Spurs. Right now I’m getting my visa and as soon as it is ready I will fly to England to sign a contract. Everything has happened very quickly so I could not even say goodbye to my team-mates.”
He continued;
“I could not decide if I wanted to go to England at first - first yes, then no. The only thing that stopped me from leaving was my family. But now all doubts are behind me and I decided to sign a contract with Tottenham and the formalities are practically settled.”
Spartak Moscow also confirmed that Tottenham had made an offer which has been accepted, and the deal will go ahead dependant on formalities between Spurs and Pavlyuchenko himself.
Spurs had been widely linked with Russia team mate Andrei Arshavin, but it seems they have chosen not to pursue their initial interest in the playmaker (although rumours have been circulating that he was left out of the Zenit St Petersburg team at the weekend due to his impending transfer to White Hart Lane).
With the same of Robbie Keane to Liverpool, and Dimitar Berbatov’s seemingly imminent departure to Old Trafford, a striker is a much needed addition to Juande Ramos’ squad. Despite Darren Bent’s impressive pre-season form, he has not performed to the same standard in Tottenham’s first two fixtures of the season - the defeats at Middlesbrough, and at home to Sunderland.
Berbatov was left out of the squad at the weekend, and is surely set to join Man Utd within days.
