Gareth Barry to Join Liverpool?

May 2, 2008 by CLDsport

According to some reports in the press today, Rafa Benitez has made Aston Villa captain Gareth Barry is top summer transfer target. Benitez is highly interested in pairing Barry with England team mate and close friend Steven Gerrard.

Villa manager Martin O’ Neill has, however, denied that Liverpool have already tabled a £10million offer for the 27 year old.

O’ Neill said: “Liverpool haven’t made a straight cash offer. They’ve made an offer involving a mish-mash of nameless player exchanges. I’m particularly disappointed to hear that business is being conducted in public. We’re trying to build a side here and we’re not a feeder club.”

Barry has stated his desire to play champions league football on numerous occasions in recent times, and could double his £40,000 a week salary by moving to Anfield.

Barry was persuaded to sign a new 4-year contract in 2006 by Martin O’ Neill, but as a 27-year-old in his prime, Barry must surely be desperate to play in the champions league - and win some silverware.

Is now the right time for Barry to leave Villa - 10 years after making his debut for the Midlands club?
