England 2 v 2 Czech Republic: Poor Performance Sees England Scrape a Draw

August 20, 2008 by CLDsport

England v Czech RepublicA poor England performance this evening has seen them only manage a 2-2 draw with the Czech Republic, and ensured the final whistle was met with huge disappointment. England twice came from behind, and were booed off the field after Cole scored a last minute equaliser.

Fabio Capello arrived in the England job with one objective - to get us winning again. Our dismal, boring, and damn right embarrassing performances under Steve McClaren’s ‘leadership’ had become to much.

So, we turned to masterful technician and coveted coach Capello to get to grips with our squad of over paid prima dona’s. On tonight’ performance, he still has some way to go. A scary though when the 2010 World Cup qualifiers start in 2 and a half weeks.

Harsh words they may seem, but unfortunately it’s the situation we have found ourselves in.

Tonight, in front of a capacity Wembley audience, England failed to deliver. On 22 minutes, Czech captain - and former Liverpool striker - Milan Baros received a low cross from Sirl with his back to goal. He turned new England captain John Terry before hitting his effort in off Ashley Cole.

England tried to create something, but time and time again they lacked the incisiveness of their opponents. Defoe had a shot saved, while Gerrard and Rooney both attempted long range efforts - yet another sign of England’s lack of flair and creativity.

Just before half-time, and England forced an equaliser. Wes Brown was first to a David Beckham cross and powered home to give the home fans some form of joy.

After the disappointing Defoe was replaced with Emile Heskey during the interval, it only took a mere 3 minutes for the Czech’s to retake the lead. A perfect free-kick from Jankulovski gave David James no chance, and it had to be said that the Czech’s fully deserved their lead.

The score really should have been 3-1 later in the half, following a goalkeeping error - hmmmm, not the first time you’ve heard that right?

David James unexplicably rushed out of his goal, only to be beaten to the ball by Vaclav Sverkos who really should have finished off the move. His shot, however, went wide.

The Czech’s always looked in control of this one, and England never looked like scoring. In truth, it took a scrappy Joe Cole finish to secure a draw in injury time. Cole finished through a crowd of players after the Czech Republic failed to clear a corner.

A 2-2 draw is a lot more than England deserved, and the Czech’s will be diappointed to have not finished this one off.

Fabio Capello - and the England squad - back to the drawing board please. Oh, and take a long hard look at yourselves. Thanks. I, for one, am tired of watching the same one dimensional drivel from my national team.
