Inter Clinch Serie A Title
Inter Milan have taken the Serie A title in the final game of the season after beating already relegated Parma 2-0.
Inter were favourites at the start of the day, but needed to win to ensure they finished above Roma - who started the day two points behind in second.
With Rome only managing a 1-1 draw away to Catania, the Nerazzurri finished 3 points above them to take a 3rd successive league title.
Inter Milan fans were banned from attending the game at Parma, but thousands celebrated outside the ground as the final whistle was blown. Inter could have clinched the title a fortnight ago, but after a 2-1 defeat to rivals AC Milan, and a disappointing 2-2 draw with Sienna at the San Siro, the title was taken right to the wire.
Both Inter goals were scored by Swedish international Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who came on as a second half sub after being injured for the last 6 weeks.
Following this afternoon’s league conclusion, Roma midfielder Daniele De Rossi launched a stinging attack on the way in which Inter have won the Scudetto this year. The season has been rife with refereeing blunders, and controversies - most of which seemed to favour Inter.
An Italian sports newspaper’s ‘revised’ league title, that took into account the refereeing blunders, showed Inter have gained 8 points more than they should have.
De Rossi said; “I may be bitter, but I will not forget that in the two months when Inter had the most difficulties, they won the way everyone saw.
“I did not want to say this before the last game because I didn’t like to further charge up the decisive Sunday, but those are my views on this season.”
Juventus finished third to ensure their appearance in the Champions League next season. Veteran striker Del Piero finished as top league scorer for the first time in his career. The 33-year-old scored 21 Serie A goals, 4 ahead of second place Ibrahimovic.
Fiorentina beat Torino 1-0 to claim the final Champions League place, finishing two points ahead of AC Milan despite their 4-1 defeat of Udinese. Milan will have to ‘make do’ with the UEFA Cup next season, alongside Udinese and Sampdoria.
Meanwhile, Catania’s draw with Roma means they stay in Serie A at the expense of Empoli who beat Livorno 2-1 respectively.
