Euro 2008 Final: Germany v Spain Team News
June 29, 2008
30 Matches, 16 Countries, 22 Days. Euro 2008 reaches it’s climax this evening with a showcase final between pre-tournament favourites Germany and the much-fancied Spanish.
90 minutes separates Germany and Spain from becoming European Champions 2008.
Latest team news suggests that inspirational captain Michael Ballack could be missing for the 3-times champions Germany. The 31-year-old missed training yesterday and has been having treatment on a calf injury that he picked up during training on Friday.
German coach Joachim Low said:
“On Friday he had problems with his right calf, the muscle has hardened and he couldn’t possibly participate in the training, so we will have to wait and see how things develop. Our medical people are working round the clock, but we have to think seriously about what’s going to happen if Michael Ballack cannot play. There are two possibilities, Tim Borowski or Bastian Schweinsteiger, both of them can take his position, but we will decide that on Sunday.”
Meanwhile, Spain will be without top scorer David Villa for the match after he suffered a thigh injury in the win over Russia. This may mean a start for Arsenal’s Cesc Fabregas who put in a match-winning performance after replacing Villa in the semi-final.
However, coach Luis Aragones may prefer to pair natural striker Daniel Guiza with Torres up front. Guiza scored in the 3-0 win over the Russians, and finished top scorer in the Spanish Primera Division last season - despite his club (Mallorca) finishing in 7th.
Opinions are split as to who is likely to win this one. Spain have played the more impressive football throughout the tournament. However, the German’s have a habit of grinding out results when under pressure. Low’s team were somewhat fortunate to come through the semi-final as Turkey were much the better team.
CLDsport are backing Spain to win 2-1. Any predictions? Post them below!

Latest news suggests that Ballack will start tonight’s match. I’m sure he’ll be doing everything in his power to be on that pitch - especially after missing the world cup final in 2002 due to suspension!
