Why Do Footballers Whinge So Much?!
May 23, 2008
Your average footballer earns around £40,000 per week - that’s just over £2million per year. Most of us will not earn that in our careers. They do a ‘job’ that the majority of men would LOVE to do. So why all the whingeing.
I’m writing in response to Nicolas Anelka’s recent comments in L’Equippe - a French newspaper, where he has voiced his discontent at being used as a winger by manager Avram Grant. He has INSISTED that he must play centre forward next season. Anelka said: “I didn’t come here to play on the right or on the left”.
What?!
The dictionary definition of a whinger is:
whinge [winj]
(informal)
vi (3rd person present singular whinges, present participle whingeing, past and past participle whinged)
1. complain peevishly: to complain annoyingly or continuously about something relatively unimportant
2. make irritating sorrowful sound: to cry or whimper annoyingly or continuously
What right does a player like Anelka have to INSIST on playing anywhere? Do I go to work and insist that I only do certain jobs? Hell no! Avram Grant makes the decisions, as he is the manager. These decisions are made in the best interests of the TEAM and it’s success. It doesn’t matter whether Anelka or any other player agrees or disagrees with the manager’s decision, so just shut-up and get on with your job - a job that we all envy.
The French striker - who is even nicknamed ‘Le Sulk’ - has played for 9 clubs in 11 years. That in itself says something for his loyalty. Anelka has now aggregated over £85million in transfer fees, and has undoubted talent, with great pace.
Personally, I agree that Anelka is best played as a centre forward, but there is no reason to go whingeing to the media about it - which only causes unrest.
Michael Essien is a central midfielder by trade, but recently Grant has been playing him as a makeshift right-back. Has Essien gone running to a newspaper to complain about it - not that I know of.
Unfortunately in today’s football, players are given far too much power. With club’s desperate desire to keep hold of their star players, they are being held to ransom by money-grabbing, disloyal players. Gone are the days when you would pull on your jersey with pride. The game is all about money, and lots of it.
Maybe tomorrow I’ll go into work and only do what I want to do and see where it gets me….. I’m guessing a not-so-friendly chat with the boss will be the result.
My view: Stop complaining, get on with your reported £4million per year job, or leave. Either way, I don’t want to hear your concerns.
Nicolas Anelka (AKA Le Sulk), I hope you get to read this, and realise how fed up we all are with your constant complaining. Stop acting like a spoilt child and concentrate on doing what you are good at - playing football. There is no I in team!!!! If Grant plays you as a winger next season, pull on your shirt, get out on the pitch and do it. That’s what you get paid £80,000 a week to do isn’t it?
