Saturday’s Premiership Roundup - 3rd May 2008
May 3, 2008 by CLDsport
Well, what a time to start our brand new featured Saturday Premiership Roundup - the penultimate week of the season! Never fear though, we will continue where we finish next season.
This is our round-up of the Premiership action, all broken up into little bite size chunks for you. Aren’t we kind?!
So, the 3rd May and the penultimate weekend of Premiership action. We saw action at both ends of the table today, and some very important fixtures. Aren’t they all this time of the year?!
Firstly, in the race for the Premier League title, Man Utd just have to keep winning to get their hands on the trophy. Today, they did just that with a 4-1 thrashing of West Ham. Cristiano Ronaldo - the man who just can’t stop scoring - grabbed himself a brace today with his 27th and 28th Premiership goals.
United were coasting after being 3-0 up inside 30 minutes following a fantastic 25-yard screamer from Carlos Tevez and Ronaldo’s brace - before Nani was sent off following a head-butt on Lucas Neill.
Dean Ashton pulled one back for the Hammers, before Carrick hammered the nail in the coffin with a Untied 4th on the hour. Man Utd are now just one win away from winning the premiership.
Blackburn came from behind to win 3-1 v relegated Derby County at Ewood Park, with a brace from Santa Cruz.
Aston Villa will be disappointed with their 2-0 defeat at home to Wigan as Everton now need just 1 point to confirm their 5th place finish - and UEFA Cup football next year. 2 goals from Valencia (the player, not the team!) sealed their fate.
In the relegation battle, Middlesbrough beat Portsmouth 2-0 with goals from Riggott and Sanli to ensure their Premiership saftey.
Meanwhile, Fulham jumped 2 places and out of the relegation zone following their 2-0 win over fellow struggler’s Birmingham City - which leaves Birmingham 1 place from the bottom and in desperate trouble.
Reading lost 1-0 to Spurs at White Hart Lane to ensure they will have a last day relegation battle on their hands. Robbie keane scored the only goal of the game in the 16th minute. Keeper Radek Cerny made a string of world class saves to frustrate Reading.
Bolton Wanderers beat Sunderland 2-0 after a goal from Diouf and a Murphy own goal. Bolton Wanderers have all but sealed their premiership survival but could still go down on goal difference next week.
