Manchester City Claim Uefa Cup Spot

Man City Logo Congratulations to Man City who have had their Uefa Cup spot confirmed for the 2008/9 season.

The Premier League won an extra Uefa Cup spot due to finishing top of the UEFA Fair Play rankings. Man City finished 5th in the Fair Play league, but all teams above them have already qualified for Europe (Manchester Utd, Arsenal, Liverpool, and Tottenham).

Manager Sven Goran Eriksson said on the club’s official site:

“It’s like the dream came true! Our dream to play in Europe has been strong all season.

“At one point we thought we were almost sure to get there, at other points we’ve been almost out of it, but now this news is absolutely fantastic for the Club, for the fans and for everyone.”

He continued: “It’s a step in the right direction because the target for this Club in the future is to play in the Champions League, and the UEFA Cup is a very good school to learn about European football.

“It’s a confirmation that we are a good team, but also a team that we behave well on the pitch, we are good with the referees and we try to follow the rules as much as possible. It’s like a bonus for us.”

City will join the Uefa Cup for the first qualifying round in July, with the draw being made on 30th June respectively.

Reports in this morning’s papers that suggest Chairman, Dr Thaksin Shinawatra, has put the entire first team up for sale, and criticised them in letters sent to each player, have been slammed as complete rubbish.

Shinawatra exclusively told mcfc.co.uk “There is absolutely no truth to this story or any of the allegations. I appreciate the progress and performance of the whole squad, managed by Sven-Goran Eriksson, this season.”
