Eriksson to Benfica?
May 9, 2008 by CLDsport
Sven Goran Eriksson has held talks with Benfica regarding a third term as coach at the Portuguese club. A statement from Benfica on Thursday confirmed that talks had taken place - however, it said that;
“No details of the contract, namely salaries and timing, have been discussed.”
Eriksson looks to be on his way out of Eastlands this summer - despite owner Shinawatra saying on Wednesday that he would wait until the season is over to make a decision on the Swede’s future at the club. Sources close to Eriksson, however, are claiming that Eriksson has already been told he will face the sack.
Shinawatra has likely been shocked by the City fans angry reaction to the imminent departure of Eriksson and has moved to play down the situation. But, it has to be said that there are too many signs that point to Eriksson leaving.
The latest, his meeting in Manchester with Benfica officials - captured by Portuguese TV, seems to be the biggest clue yet.
Eriksson has coached the Portuguese outfit twice before and has an outstanding record with them. In the 1980’s he won two championships and a domestic cup. He followed this up on his return to the club in 1989 with a European Cup final appearance in 1990, and winning the Portuguese title in 1991.
Recent news suggests that Luiz Felipe Scolari has been approached with regards to taking over the reigns at City. Although he has previously been reluctant to uproot his family - part of the reason he turned down the England job. Scolari is also said to be reluctant to discuss his future ahead of the Euro 2008 tournament this summer - where he will be coaching Portugal.
