Stanford Super Series Squad Announced

September 9, 2008 by CLDsport

The 15-man England squad for the upcoming Stanford Super Series in the Caribbean has been announced. Steve Harmison, who has recently come out of one-day International cricket retirement, has been selected, leading to accusations of being financially motivated (CLDsport: Who in the world is NOT financially motivated anyway?!).

England will meet the Stanford Super Stars on November 1st for a prize of $20million (approx £11.5million), with each player of the winning side guaranteed a £500,000 payment.

Whether prize money of this magnitude is good for cricket is another matter, but Steve Harmison’s selection has raised a few eyebrows - in particular, his apparent change of heart with regards to his one-day international retirement in the run-up to this match.

Whereas his selection is justified given his current form - he performed magnificently in the recent one-day series against the South Africans - is his change of heart financially motivated. Well, so what if it is!

If I put myself in his position, and I thought I was good enough to be chosen to participate in this match, I wouldn’t think twice about making myself available for selection. It’s a nice retirement fund for certain. So, rant over, lets leave Harmison alone. It simply DOES NOT matter what his motives are. One thing is for sure, he will want to win - and that’s enough for me.

Prior to the $20million match with the Sandford Super Stars, England will also face domestic Twenty20 Cup winners Middlesex, and the Caribbean winners of the same tournament, Trinidad & Tobago.

The Sandford Super Stars have named a 17-man squad for the lucrative meeting. The selection panel - led by Sir Viv Richards - have named Chris Gayle, Shiv Chanderpaul, and Ramnaresh Sarwan among others. Full details below.
