England Beat South Africa Against Odds

England 275-4 (50 overs) bt South Africa 255 (49.4 overs) by 20 runs
England have beaten South Africa in the first one-day international of the series, despite the visitors always looking favourites to take the match.
The win was inspired by newly installed captain Kevin Pietersen, who rejuvenated a slow England start as he shared a 158 stand with Flintoff for the 4th wicket.
Pietersen finished on 90 not out off 82 balls, while Flintoff was bowled out by Steyn in 78 (off 70 deliveries). Earlier notable contributions from Bell (35) and Prior (42) ensured England reached a ‘respectable’ 275-4 off their 50 overs.
South Africa’s reply started brightly, and looked to most as favourites to reach their target before the recalled Harmison and captain Pietersen fought back.
The Proteas lost their last 5 wickets for just over 50 runs after being 200-5 at one point - with plenty of overs left to take the match.
The rejuvenated Harmison kept his bowling tight when it was needed, leading to the required run-rate creeping up into the double figures. The South Africans needed to be more aggressive to stay in with a chance, but this only led to England claiming important wickets.
Harmison looked impressive, finishing with figures of 2-43 off his alloted 10 overs. Flintoff also claimed 2 wickets, and so did Pietersen.
The new captain led the team professionally throughout, with the bat, the ball, and in the field. The 28-year-old looks to have taken to his new role with ease and appears to have the respect of his fellow players.
England’s attack finally finished off all hope of a South African win in the final over as they were bowled out for 255 - 21 runs short of a victory.
The defeat is the first South Africa have suffered in their last 10 ODIs.
