Roger Federer has won his fifth successive US Open while ending Andy Murray’s hopes at Flushing Meadows. The world number 2 took the match 6-2 7-5 6-2 in spectacular style.
All eyes were on Andy Murray on Monday for his first Grand Slam final appearance, and his attempt to become the the first British man since 1936 to win one of the coveted major singles titles.
Murray was high in confidence, and spirits, after his semi-final win against world number 1 Rafael Nadal - his first ever win over the Wimbledon champion.
But, Roger Federer - who has had a tough year - controlled this final from start to finish, and was in riveting form throughout.
Federer himself had beaten world number 3 Novak Djokovic in the semis, Read more
Mid Summer Hard Court Action

The tennis world certainly seems split in two, which I’ll touch on a bit more, for now here are some of the results from the last week in tennis:
Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina continued his incredibly hot summer by winning the Countrywide Classic in Los Angeles yesterday. He defeated American Andy Roddick (one of the few big names not competing in Beijing) 6-1, 7-6 in the finals. In doing so, del Potro vaulted into the top 20 at spot #19 for the first time in his career. This is the third tournament in a row that del Potro has won (also Austrian Open and Stuttgart). Regardless of how he does in the final couple weeks leading up to the US Open, NO ONE will be excited to see del Potro in there portion of the draw. Read more

Nadal and Murray Lose in Rome
May 7, 2008 by CLDsport · Leave a Comment
We always like to own up when we’ve messed up…….. and now is one of those times. Earlier today, we predicted that Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal would meet in the 3rd round of the Rome Masters.
However, both lost their 2nd round matches today, and exit the tournament. What a cock-up! Let’s be honest though, you would have put your money on Nadal winning, although Murray would have been a less secure bet - but worth a punt. CLDsport can only be happy that we didn’t put our money where our mouth was.
Nadal faced unseeded Juan Carlos Ferrero, and started as strong favourite. But, after struggling with a blister on his foot (ouch!) he was comprehensively beaten 7-5 6-1 by Ferrero. It comes as a blow to the Spaniard and world number 2 with the French Open starting on the 25th May.
Nadal told reporters that his participation in the match was in doubt. Nadal said;
“Juan Carlos is a very tough opponent, but certainly if you’re not 100% at a Masters Series event it is very tough, Today when I woke up, I said it was impossible to play. I spoke to the doctor today and yesterday and they put special protection on it and cream, but it was still tough. I congratulate Juan Carlos, but for sure that was not my best tennis.”
The defeat is Nadal’s first on clay since the final in Hamburg last year - against Federer - and his first EVER defeat in Rome.
Ferrero will now meet Stanislas Wawrinka in the 3rd round following his defeat of Andy Murray.
British number 1 Andy Murray went out to Wawrinka 6-2 7-6. The defeat ended his hopes of finding some form on clay ahead of the French Open later this month. The Scot was hampered by seemingly hurting himself while stretching for a ball and subsequently called for the trainer. The world number 18 complained of a tightness in his legs - something which he has suffered with on numerous occasions before.
In other news, David Nalbandian and David Ferrer were both knocked out. Seventh seed Nalbandian lost a fantastic battle against Almagro of Spain 6-4 7-5. Fifth seed Ferrer lost to Stepanek of the Czech Republic despite winning the first set - eventually finishing 4-6 6-2 6-1.
Murray to Meet Nadal?
May 7, 2008 by CLDsport · Leave a Comment
Andy Murray is due to play Stanislas Wawrinka in the Rome Masters shortly, with knowledge that if he wins, he will face Rafael Nadal in round three.
Murray beat Juan Martin del Potro in round one on Monday after the Argentinian retired in the 3rd set - with the score tied at 1 set each.
Nadal is to face Ferrero in round 2 and is strong favourite to beat the unseeded Ferrero. If Murray advances, he will meet Nadal in round 3.
Murray has beaten Wawrinka twice already this season, but the Swiss prefers clay and is ranked just six places below Murray in 24th.
Elsewhere in the tournament, Federer is through to the 3rd round after beating Argentinian Canas 6-3, 6-3 and will face either Starace or Karlovic for a place in the 4th round.
Andy Roddick has also booked his place in the 3rd round after winning easily (6-1, 6-4) against fellow American Fish.
While there have been no unexpected results as yet in Rome, could Murray put Nadal out in the 3rd round? Stay tuned to CLDsport for more results as we get them.
