New Zealand vs England- The Tour so far.

February 27, 2008 by Rob Scanlon · Leave a Comment

At about the midway stage of the New Zealand tour, it seems like a good time to provide a bit of analysis on how the England team are progressing, and to look forward to the upcoming three match test series.

The Twenty20 matches should probably be glossed over with a pretty light brush. The format is great fun, and a big draw for people not into the intricacies of test match cricket, but at International level, it isn’t taken too seriously, and rightly so. The Indian Cricket League may change all that, however. But England’s thrashings of New Zealand aren’t of much importance and certainly weren’t an indicator of form going into the 50 over matches.

The 3-1 one day series defeat was very frustrating after the good wins against India and Sri Lanka. England’s batsmen’s running in the early games was surprisingly poor, the bowling attack looked wooden and inflexible, and we were outplayed by a New Zealand side who knew their limits, and stuck to them.

February 20, 2008 by Rob Scanlon · 4 Comments

The ‘39th game’ idea from the Premier League that has caused such flames of animosity is still flickering at the moment, but it seems as though Richard Scudamore’s vision is not shared by many, and seems doomed to be extinguished.

How Sports Commentators Make a Difference…..

Well, I guess this is a bit of a rant - while trying not to offend anyone!

Last night I watched Slavia Prague v Spurs in the UEFA Cup live on five (UK TV Station). Now, time to be honest, I’m a passionate Spurs fan and have been all my life so either way I was going to make sure I watched the game.

But, here is my rant, why is the commentary on five so uninspiring and - I hate to say it - BORING! I wish I’d taken notice of the names of the 2 commentators during last nights game, but the truth is I tried to forget they were even there.

This made me think…… Sports commentators have a bigger part to play in Read more

Cricket Extremes - Australia vs India

February 14, 2008 by CLDsport · Leave a Comment

Positive cricket should always be the norm. While negative cricket should always be avoided. But extremes in both these forms of cricket bring disrepute to this great game of cricket.

Australia has been playing positive cricket over the decades. They have the competitive and fighting spirit, aggression, tough physical and mental frame and the right attitude of playing for win. They possess the ‘killer instinct’ to enforce win from any position of a particular match. And they have harvested the results. They have been the invincible team for at least a decade. They have recorded consecutive sixteen test wins two times. They have won the World Cup thrice in succession in 2007 in the one day format. Well, so far so good.

In the name of positive cricket Australia has also been indulging in mouthing abuses Read more

Watch the game tonight at 8pm on BBC1 for those of you in the UK or BBCSport Website for those of you who are not - unless you are lucky enough to have tickets to the game of course.

So, how is the game going to go? Of course it is only a friendly, but it’s Fabio Capello’s first game in charge and as any new England manager he will be examined in great detail. The performance tonight will, Read more
